On January 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists breeched the capitol, assaulted and killed police, and strode though those halls in search of representatives (and Vice-President Pence) to threaten and likely kill. Certainly, they were in search of Pence to hang. Then there was the break-ins to offices, shitting former speaker Pelosi’s desk, and of course, for the first time in U.S. history, a Confederate flag was raised in the building. It could be argued that the insurrection was successful. We had a four-year break from the madness but Trump and his cadre were not silenced. They were not held to account and, in fact, their voice was amplified over the course of the Biden administration. While foot soldiers were arrested and sentenced, the power structure remained in place. The members of Congress who denied the election results, who supported the insurrection, remained in power. They were not censured, they held their respective offices. Moreover, as mentioned, Trump continued to...

We’ve been here before; but this is worse

Fire at Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela's largest military complex, is seen from a distance after a series of explosions in Caracas on Saturday. AFP/Getty Images  There’s no room for being a pollyanna about US involvement in Latin America. It’s a tale of exploitation, manipulation, overthrows of democratically elected representatives, oppression, disappearances, and too many other forms of interference that have had catastrophic results for the people of any given country that we’ve targeted. First, some reminders of stuff to do and some looks back. And some long form discussions. For instance, drugs and where they come from. Next, a look at history and economics. Thanks to Bluesky user Shooti. And now, a year’s end of memes, notes, comments, and miscellany, hopefully proving some reflection and thought. Also, don’t gripe: do something. Donate to someone you support for local office, or better yet, volunteer for them. Register people to vote. Call your reps about issues that matter to you. Talk to neighbors, run for office. Write op-eds in your local paper. Or on social media. Engage in meaningful dialog. You get the idea. Anyway, enjoy this buffet of badinage and enjoy a plate of political wit or a round of repartee! See you in 2026! Also, Trump’s right about this:
