Nothing to save here: the SAVE Act is an abomination (H.R. 22)

Image
I don’t think I need to spend a lot of time on the history of the so-called SAVEAct. It had been drafted last congressional session, died, and has been reintroduced in more appalling drag. What I do want to do is bring this to everyone’s attention that I can that this is the single most dangerous piece of legislation to come before Congress in terms of stripping away the majority of American’s access to voting. It passed the House and is in the pipeline for passing the Senate. Because this is of the moment, I’m sharing tools from yesterday’s call with Declaration for Democracy Coalition that they have provided. Included is a FAQ to lay out taking points, as well as a factsheet from The Center for American Progress. This is for the national SAVE Act. Texas and 18 other states have drafted similar measures with anele toward restricting voter access and crippling democracy. SB16/HB 5337 go before the legislature in Austin tomorrow. I will frame a separate post for that and link to i...

TEXANS! Tell our senators to oppose SB16/HB 5337

This is an all-hands issue. Tomorrrow. Texas’ version of the SAVE Act goes before the state senate. This is a copycat bill of the SAVE Act that passed the House of Representatives this month and will come up for a vote by the U.S. Senate. These bills are designed to suppress access to voting under the guise of ensuring that non-citizens cannot vote. Non-citizens already cannot vote; this legislation would impose greater hardships on voters by requiring proof of citizenship in the form of our birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers. At the national level, an estimated 150 million people don’t have passports. Given that married women will have to present their birth certificate because their married name differs from their birthname will add to the burden of casting a ballot. This same measure is designed to suppress trans people from voting since the name at birth is going to be different form their current name. For what you can do: Today, register for Rapid Respons...

Here’s my second weekly omnibus of actions to take, events to attend, rallies and protests, calls to make, reps to meet, and more! Another go-round: Be Someone Protest and March, Houston

Image
The numbers might have been smaller, but the voices were still vital. Source: John Barrett  The turn-out was smaller, and. While I understand that seems a problem, I keep in mind that it’s Easter weekend and many people are out of town or already with family. However, a part of me agrees with the woman I was following during the march, who said, ruleully, “we’re the city that everyone else in the state fears.” Sure, should the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the country, serve as an example? Perhaps.  But I want to look at this another way. Yes, turn-out was low, but people still came out and met the moment. It was a lively mix of people and there was still a vital energy in the air. People showing up  are inspired by the hope, the possibility that we can take the country back. Moreover, groups from different organizations were presorted to help people get involved, and after the march, the crowd is encouraged to meet a stranger, shake a hand and hare idea...

Stuff to Do: Texas Edition

Image
Texas Gun Sense is making this Friday, April 18, a day of action to help get meaningful gun legislation passed in post-Uvalde Texas. From the email they sent out: “April 18 marks two years since the Uvalde families sat at the Texas Capitol for 13 heartbreaking hours, waiting to testify in support of HB 2744—the Raise the Age bill. They showed up for Texas. They showed up for their children.   The bill never passed.   Since then, the Texas Legislature has failed to take meaningful action to prevent future tragedies like Uvalde. It's been nearly three years since 19 children and two teachers were killed with an AR-15-style rifle purchased legally by an 18-year-old. The only thing their families want is to prevent this from happening to someone else. This Friday, April 18, we are showing up for them.   Join our Day of Action and help flood lawmakers with calls and emails demanding they support  HB 1556 —this session’s Raise the Age bill. Here’s what you can do: ...
