I’m resigned to and actually, happily accepting of, the fact
that no one reads these babblings. There’s part of me that feels that taking
this blog down is the right thing to do, but there’s another part of me that is
of the mind that I can still use is as an exercise in “public” composition.
I mean by this that continuing to push out content to the
ether is still publishing and as such, requires a degree of thought and
reflection before haphazardly tossing off random drivel.
I usually work with “bare minimums” in art; what are the
materials immediately available and how can they be used? Can they be extended
and used more than once? This isn’t a matter of economics, it is actually a
challenge to see if what’s at hand can be repurposed for something else. Spray
paint, the remaining acrylics, graph paper, construction paper, tape, whatever
is around that can be brought together to produce a thing without having to
expend additional energy that could be better used for the immediate
realization of the project in mind. And sure, if it requires further
development and more or different supplies, then I will bring those into the
next phase.
Writing is the opposite. I don’t need any additional materials
and the content is always at hand. The words flow from an idea or a reaction to
something in the world. Here’s the thing, though; absent a reader, is it
worthwhile to continue writing or publishing this?
I believe so. One, at the very least, writing these random
musings is a kind of discipline that helps clarify points of view that I want
to express verbally and the research that goes into some pieces, aids me in
refining conceptions and removing misconceptions that I might have had about a
topic. Pushing these pieces out into the Void of the Internet gives me a chance
to come back to those ideas, critique them and modify them.
That last sentence infers that I do editing on posts after I’ve
come back to them and I don’t necessarily mean that; while I have edited posts because
I’ve changed my perspective or learned that I needed to correct something, what
I mean is that seeing the object in the world gives me a chance to encounter
the same ideas from a different perspective. Sometimes this leads to enhancing
or enlarging a perspective, sometimes it leads to discarding the idea wholesale
(and the post, as well; I’m perfectly fine with deleting a post if it no longer
serves a purpose or I no longer agree with what I’d written.)
All of this said, I’m kicking around the idea of writing a
post a day until the end of the year. I have a lot of posts in one form of
development or other and random translations that I think if I put them out
here, I could come back to and improve or at least, tweak. It’s not like I lack
for content.
I find the idea of writing a post a day a little daunting,
but it may prove worthwhile. We think and reflect and hopefully, these thoughts
and reflections assist us in navigating being-in-the-world. I don’t want to
necessarily write about events I’ve attended; those can be posted online on
LinkedIn or on FB. I do, though, want to try out returning to dropped threads
and picking up others and see what develops by year’s end.
If there is a you reading this, forgive this indulgence of
me pretty much talking to myself. Tomorrow, let’s see what shows up.
