Memes in the Time of Trump 2.0: January 6th Edition

On January 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists breeched the capitol, assaulted and killed police, and strode though those halls in search of representatives (and Vice-President Pence) to threaten and likely kill. Certainly, they were in search of Pence to hang. Then there was the break-ins to offices, shitting former speaker Pelosi’s desk, and of course, for the first time in U.S. history, a Confederate flag was raised in the building.

It could be argued that the insurrection was successful. We had a four-year break from the madness but Trump and his cadre were not silenced. They were not held to account and, in fact, their voice was amplified over the course of the Biden administration. While foot soldiers were arrested and sentenced, the power structure remained in place. The members of Congress who denied the election results, who supported the insurrection, remained in power. They were not censured, they held their respective offices. Moreover, as mentioned, Trump continued to campaign and was exempt from litigation while a candidate because…he was a candidate? The legal precedents set in the wake of January 6 were among the most illogical and deleterious to the well-being of the republic.

That Trump had immense  assistance in returning to office doesn’t allow for the domestic malfeasance that provided the scaffolding for his return to power. No matter how we analyze it, we cannot forget the January 6, 2021 insurrection because we are still in it.

We need to continue fighting. We also need to be prepared for darker times to come. We also need to hang together, hold each other closely, and we need to understand that the ship is not going to right itself. We need to, as a people, reimagine what our society can be. We need to rethink democracy as it has been implemented.

In the meantime, I will end this edition with more positive memes that will hopefully give ideas for how to make it through the time ahead.
