Nothing to save here: the SAVE Act is an abomination (H.R. 22)
I don’t think I need to spend a lot of time on the history of the so-called SAVEAct. It had been drafted last congressional session, died, and has been reintroduced in more appalling drag. What I do want to do is bring this to everyone’s attention that I can that this is the single most dangerous piece of legislation to come before Congress in terms of stripping away the majority of American’s access to voting.
It passed the House and is in the pipeline for passing the Senate. Because this is of the moment, I’m sharing tools from yesterday’s call with Declaration for Democracy Coalition that they have provided. Included is a FAQ to lay out taking points, as well as a factsheet from The Center for American Progress.
This is for the national SAVE Act. Texas and 18 other states have drafted similar measures with anele toward restricting voter access and crippling democracy. SB16/HB 5337 go before the legislature in Austin tomorrow. I will frame a separate post for that and link to it here.
Call your senators. talk to friends about this bill and get them to follow suit. Join a phone bank, write emails. Refer to DFAD's Partner Toolkit for more actions to take.
