TEXANS! Tell our senators to oppose SB16/HB 5337

Personal holding a sign against voter suppression

This is an all-hands issue. Tomorrrow. Texas’ version of the SAVE Act goes before the state senate. This is a copycat bill of the SAVE Act that passed the House of Representatives this month and will come up for a vote by the U.S. Senate.

These bills are designed to suppress access to voting under the guise of ensuring that non-citizens cannot vote. Non-citizens already cannot vote; this legislation would impose greater hardships on voters by requiring proof of citizenship in the form of our birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers.

At the national level, an estimated 150 million people don’t have passports. Given that married women will have to present their birth certificate because their married name differs from their birthname will add to the burden of casting a ballot. This same measure is designed to suppress trans people from voting since the name at birth is going to be different form their current name.
