A Big Beautiful Crowd - Houston No Kings Day All photos: John Barrett |
This is my recap: what a wonderful day! I was a little late arriving and couldn’t believe what I saw: the crowd was spilling over to Tranquility Park and it was all I could do to get closer to City Hall. Once I did, I was blown away! Such a great turnout. Official count: 26,000. This is as many people as protested the. Iraq War in 2002 in Boston (right after it launched and before W. declared “Mission. Accomplished!” Who knew the Occupier would make Bush look downright anodyne?)
There were quite a few highlights but for me, the best was Texas 9th District Congressional Rep Al Green!!! He’s on fire and ready to keep hammering away at the Occupier and the Regime.
We also had a moment of silence for Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark who were murdered today in a targeted shooting by a shooter who may be impersonating law enforcement. Also injured are Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. Please do not let anyone say this in unrelated to the Occupier and his spewing of hatred and strongman bullshit. This moment will be met.
As for today’s rally and march? It was - as all others have been and with many times the crowd - peaceful and lovely. No federal presence that I could see (though the assumption is that they’re there) and HPD was supportive and watchful. No knuckleheads; no disruption But a lot of love and a lot of enthusiasm!
Pictures:
I’ll post these in chronological order. I came up on the Tranquillity Park side (the photos with the “silos”) and perched myself on a promontory. Then headed on down and by the time I got to the installation about the history of Israel and the occupation of Gaza and the current genocide, it was about time to start marching. Most of the videos are from the march.
The wind-down and wrap-up is from the pool where I started with Lady Liberty on the wall of the pool and rotated around to take in folks wading (it’s Houston…it’s warm…okay, it’s hot).
The last speaker was Isaiah Martin who’s thrown his hat in the ring to run for Congress. One thing I’ve seen over the past few months is how many people are willing to step up and run for office. It’s going to be a feisty election season when it rolls around!
Oh, yeah, and one more thing:
NO KINGS!

Given how well-behaved the crowd was, I take it that HPD’s horse patrol enjoyed taking it easy. |
